The lesson
Warm-up — same day, two places
5 min- Ask what the weather is doing at the equator and at the pole today.
- Take the answers and ask why they are so different.
Teach — latitude, height and sea
15 min- Show the globe: sunlight falls straight on at the equator and slanting at the poles.
- Equator: hot all year with heavy rain, so dense forest. Poles: cold, ice, almost no trees.
- Add the desert belt: very little rain, and plants that store water.
- Add height: colder as you climb, so snow on summits even in a warm country.
- Add the sea: a western coast in the middle latitudes is mild and damp; deep inland is hot then cold.
- Name the three causes together: how far from the equator, how high, and how near the sea.

Why: The description is the visible half.
Fix: Ask which of the three causes puts it there.
