Students will be able to explain interest as a price and say why one borrower is charged more than another.

The lesson
Warm-up — the extra three hundred
5 min- A mill borrows 5,000 pounds and repays 5,300. Ask what the 300 is.
- Take the answers, including 'a fine'.
Teach — a price, both ways, and risk
17 min- Name it: interest is the price of using somebody else's money.
- Ask why a lender charges anything. That money could have earned elsewhere meanwhile.
- Turn it round: the relief fund in a savings bank earns interest for the union.
- Define the rate: the cost as a share of what was borrowed, not a flat sum.
- Now risk: why is a failing weaver charged more than a mill? He is less likely to repay.
- Take Thomas Reid's unpaid fare. If he borrowed it, the debt survives whether he sails or not.
- Ask what a rise from 3 to 7 in the hundred does to new mills being built.

- For three, they say whether the rate would be high or low, and why.
- Groups work out the effect of a rate rise on the region's building.

Why: It looks like paying extra for a mistake.
Fix: It is a price agreed in advance. A penalty follows breaking something.
Thinks only borrowers meet interest.
Why: That is the memorable direction.
Fix: The relief fund earns it. Same idea, other side.
Thinks a higher rate means a greedier lender.
Why: Higher looks worse.
Fix: It usually prices risk. Ask who is less likely to repay.
