The lesson
Warm-up — cool on the equator
5 min- Describe a place on the equator with a mild, spring-like climate all year.
- Ask how that is possible.
Teach — four causes, then the exceptions
18 min- Latitude: direct sun at the equator, slanting at the poles.
- Air movement: air sinks near the tropics and dries, which is where the deserts lie.
- Height: colder with altitude, which answers the warm-up. A tropical plateau is temperate.
- Distance from sea: a continental interior swings between hot and hard cold.
- Currents: a cold current gives fog rather than rain, and desert behind the coast.
- Say the method: name which cause is doing the work, and when two combine.
- Then the exceptions: the simplest rule, latitude alone, gets several regions wrong.
