The lesson
Warm-up — describe our own
5 min- Describe the town's own region in two features.
- That is the baseline.
Teach — near regions and far ones
13 min- Take the coast two hours away: harbours, fishing, salt air.
- Take the uplands: thin soil, sheep.
- Then a Mediterranean country: warm enough for oranges all year.
- Say the Grade 2 addition: regions differ mostly because of heat, rain and height.
- Ask which of those three explains each region.

Guided practice — describe and explain
12 min- Pairs match six regions to descriptions.
- For three they name which of the three factors explains it.
- They compare two with here.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the regions page.
- Read each region aloud.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Describes by animals or food only.
Why: Those are memorable.
Fix: Ask about heat, rain and height. The animals follow from those.
Thinks a region is a country.
Why: Both are areas.
Fix: The uplands cross several counties.
Describes without comparing.
Why: Listing is easier.
Fix: Always finish with 'compared with here'.

- Explain a region using two of the three factors.
- Find two regions with the same heat and different rain.
- Say which factor explains our own region.
