The lesson
Warm-up — where does money come from?
5 min- Ask where the money in a purse came from. Take every answer.
- Most will say a bank or a machine. Say that is where it was kept, not where it came from.
Teach — work first, money after
13 min- Take the baker. They bake bread, people buy it, that is their money.
- Take the bus driver. They drive, the bus company pays them.
- Say the pattern: somebody does something useful, somebody else pays for it.
- Name the word wage: the money you are paid for working.
- Ask what people do with a wage. Buy the things they need.

Guided practice — who pays?
12 min- Pairs take six jobs and say what the person does and who pays them.
- They find one where the payer is not obvious.
- Take feedback on that one.

8 min- Students complete the earning page.
- Read each question aloud.

2 min- Name a job. Take how that person earns.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks money comes from the cash machine.
Why: That is where they have seen it appear.
Fix: Ask who put it in. Walking it back one step lands the idea.
Thinks everybody is paid the same.
Why: Nobody has said otherwise.
Fix: Leave this one open at Kindergarten. Say only that jobs are paid differently and why is a bigger question.
Thinks people work because they must, with no link to money.
Why: Work is presented as a duty.
Fix: Ask what would happen if nobody paid the baker. The link is what makes the job possible.

- Three jobs rather than six.
- Give what they do and collect who pays.
If they finish early
- Name a job where lots of people each pay a little.
- Say what a shopkeeper does with the money they take.
- Say how somebody who works at home earns.
