Students will be able to sort local features and identify one that is both natural and shaped by people.
Students are successful when they can
- Sorts features into two groups.
- Names one that is both.
- Says how people shaped it.

The lesson
Warm-up — out of the window, further
5 min- List eight things visible from the gate rather than the window.
- Do not sort yet.
Teach — the middle pile
13 min- Sort the obvious ones into natural and built.
- Take the park: grass is natural, the layout and the mowing are not.
- Put it in the middle and say why.
- Do the stream, straightened by people long ago.
- Say the Grade 1 addition: most of the landscape round here is both.

Guided practice — three piles
12 min- Pairs sort twelve features into three piles.
- For each middle one they say how people shaped it.
- Take feedback on the middle pile only.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the nature-or-people page.
- Read each feature aloud.

2 min- Name one feature that is both.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Sorts anything green as natural.
Why: Colour is the quickest test.
Fix: A mown lawn is green and entirely shaped by people.
Refuses the middle pile.
Why: Two piles imply two answers.
Fix: Model it with the park. Both is the commonest honest answer here.
Thinks old built things are natural.
Why: They have always been there.
Fix: Somebody built the wall, however long ago.
If they are not there yet
- Two piles rather than three.
- Six features rather than twelve.
If they finish early
- Find a natural feature people have changed twice.
- Say what the area looked like before any building.
- Say what would happen if nobody maintained the park.
Exit ticket
Is the park natural or made by people? Explain.
What to look for: Both, with an explanation of the human shaping. A flat answer means the middle pile needs revisiting.
