The lesson
Warm-up — a desert beside the sea
5 min- Describe a coast with fog every morning and almost no rain.
- Ask how a place beside an ocean can be a desert.
Teach — four causes
17 min- Latitude: sunlight straight on at the equator, slanting at the poles.
- Equatorial belt hot and wet with rainforest; polar latitudes cold with almost no trees.
- Air movement: near the tropics air sinks and dries, which is where the great deserts lie.
- Height: colder as you climb, so snow above a line even in a hot country.
- Distance from the sea: a continental interior has hot summers and hard winters.
- Currents: a cold current beside a coast gives fog and a desert behind it. Answer the warm-up.
- Say the method: name which cause is doing the work, and say when two disagree.

Why: Deserts are the memorable hot place.
Fix: The equator is hot and drenched. Heat and rain are separate questions.
Describes a region without a cause.
Why: The description is the visible half.
Fix: Ask which of the four causes puts it there.
