Students will be able to match a living thing to its place and give the need that explains it.

- A model habitat tray: damp soil, a stone, water, dry sand
- Picture cards of a fish, a snail, a worm and a cactus

The lesson
Warm-up — the wrong home
5 min- Put the fish card on the dry sand and ask what is wrong.
- Take the answer and hold it: it needs water.
Teach — the need explains the place
12 min- Place the snail card under the stone. Ask why there and not on the sand.
- Answer it: the snail needs to stay damp, and under the stone is damp.
- Place the worm in damp soil: it eats and moves through soil.
- Place the cactus in dry sand: it holds water inside its stem.
- Say the rule: living things live where their needs are met.
- Ask what happens to the snail on the dry sand. Test with a picture, not an animal.

Investigate — build the tray
15 min- Groups make four small areas in a tray: water, damp soil, a stone, dry sand.
- They place picture cards where each living thing belongs.
- They say aloud the need behind each placing.
- One group swaps two cards and asks another group to spot the mistake.
Independent practice
10 min- Students complete the 'Why It Lives There' page.
- Check the reason names a need rather than a preference.

3 min- Ask where in the school grounds a woodlouse would live, and why.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says the animal lives there because it likes it.
Why: Liking is the everyday reason.
Fix: Ask what it would run out of somewhere else. That is the need.
Thinks any wet place suits any wet-loving animal.
Why: Wet is wet.
Fix: A fish in a damp patch of soil still cannot breathe. Match the need exactly.
Thinks a plant could simply move if it needed to.
Why: Animals move, so plants might.
Fix: The cactus is rooted. Where its seed lands has to be somewhere it can live.
If they are not there yet
- Two places and two living things.
- Give the need on the back of each card.
If they finish early
- Find a living thing that could live in two of the places.
- Say what the tray is missing that a bird would need.
- Explain why a woodlouse curls up in the sun.
