The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Put a trout card on a desert photograph and ask what happens.
- Then put a daisy on a mown lawn and ask the same.
Teach — three outcomes, not two
14 min- Place a trout in a cold fast stream: survives well, because it needs cold moving water.
- Place a daisy on a mown lawn: survives less well, because mowing keeps cutting it back.
- Place a trout in a warm stagnant pond: cannot survive, because it needs oxygen-rich cold water.
- Say the difference between the middle and the last: less well means it hangs on.
- Do a cactus in a bog and a fern on desert rock.
- Say the rule: match the organism's needs to what the habitat supplies.

Investigate — place twelve
19 min- Groups place twelve organism cards on four habitat photographs.
- They sort each into survives well, less well, or cannot.
- They write the deciding need for six of them.
- They find one organism that could go in two categories and say why.

14 min- Students complete the 'Well, Less Well, Not at All' page.
- Check the middle category is genuinely used.

Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.

Why: Things either live somewhere or not.
Fix: A daisy on a mown lawn survives, badly. That is the middle.
Decides by whether the organism looks at home.
Why: Appearance is available.
Fix: Name the need. Looks are not evidence.
Thinks anything can adapt if given time.
Why: Adaptation is a word they know.
Fix: A trout in a warm pond dies this week. That is the question being asked.
