Students will be able to test materials against a stated job and choose one using the results.
Students are successful when they can

- Hoops, four materials, a measuring cup of water, a timer

The lesson
Warm-up — best at what?
5 min- Hold up steel and wool and ask which is better.
- Refuse to answer until somebody asks what for.
Teach — the job decides
13 min- Write the job on the board: keep the rain off a person.
- Test plastic, waxed cloth, cotton and paper with the same cup of water for 30 seconds.
- Fill the results table and read off which kept the water out.
- Now change the job to 'let you see through a window' and ask which wins.
- Say the rule: best depends on the job, and the job comes first.
- Name what has to stay the same: same water, same hoop, same time.

Investigate — two jobs, four materials
17 min- Groups test four materials for waterproofness with the same cup and timer.
- They record the results in a table.
- They then judge the same four against a second job, such as a bag handle.
- They notice which material won each job, and say why the winner changed.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete the 'Right Material for the Job' page.
- Check every answer names the job it is judging against.

3 min- Ask what material the class would choose for a school bag, and for what reason.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Names a best material with no job stated.
Why: Some materials feel generally better.
Fix: Ask 'best at what?' Steel is a poor raincoat.
Uses different amounts of water on each material.
Why: Pouring by eye is quicker.
Fix: Same cup every time, or the results cannot be compared.
Chooses by appearance after testing.
Why: The results contradicted a preference.
Fix: Point at the table. The choice has to follow the results.

- Find a job where the losing material wins.
- Add a second property that would decide between two equal winners.
- Design a test for a job nobody has tested yet.
