The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Read the two-village flood record: 14, 9, 17 upstream against 11, 2, 3 downstream.
- Ask what changed between the first and second storm.
Teach — evidence, cost, limit
14 min- Point at the natural comparison: same river, similar rainfall, one village defended.
- Say what the bank reduced, using the figures.
- Now the cost: money, land, and the view from the village.
- Now the limit: a storm larger than the bank was built for.
- Do a second solution, such as moving homes, and fill the same three boxes.
- Compare the two on the grid rather than on preference.

Investigate — compare two solutions
19 min- Groups take one hazard and two proposed solutions.
- They fill reduces, costs and cannot-stop for each, using data where available.
- They rank the two and justify the ranking.
- They name what evidence would change their ranking.
