The lesson
Warm-up — before and after
5 min- Show two photographs of the same cliff, fifty years apart.
- Ask how long the change took, and how anybody could know.
Teach — two speeds, one planet
13 min- Sort a volcano and a landslide as quick, with photographs as evidence.
- Sort a canyon and a worn mountain as slow, with the same kind of evidence unavailable.
- Ask how we know about slow changes if nobody watched them.
- Answer it: from the marks left behind, and from photographs decades apart.
- Run the sand tray: a jug of water carves a channel in seconds.
- Say what the model gets wrong: a real canyon took far longer than a jug.

Investigate — sort eight events
17 min- Groups read short texts on eight Earth events.
- They sort each into quick or slow and note the source.
- They mark any they disagree about and say why.
- They run the sand tray and time how long the channel took.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Thinks slow changes are not really happening.
Why: Nothing can be seen moving.
Fix: Compare the two cliff photographs. It happened; it was just slow.
Thinks the sand tray shows how long a canyon takes.
Why: The model made one in seconds.
Fix: The model shows how, not how long. Say what it gets wrong.
Sorts by how dramatic the event is.
Why: Quick events are dramatic.
Fix: A flood is quick and a cave is slow. Sort by time, not by drama.

- Find an event that is both, such as a cliff that crumbles slowly and falls suddenly.
- Say how you would measure a slow change at school.
- Order four slow changes from fastest to slowest.
