The lesson
Warm-up — the noisy nest
5 min- Play or describe chicks calling in a nest and ask why they do it.
- Ask what the parent does about it.
Teach — behaviour, then benefit
13 min- Fill the grid for the blackbird: brings worms all day, so the chicks are fed before they can feed themselves.
- Fill it for the elephant: the herd walks slowly, so the calf keeps up.
- Fill it for the penguin: the father holds the egg on his feet, so it stays off the ice.
- Ask what all three have in common. Each helps the young survive.
- Add the frog, which lays eggs and leaves. Ask whether the pattern is universal. It is not.
- Say the honest version: many parents help, and not all do.

Investigate — gather from sources
17 min- Groups use the books and the clip to fill the grid for three more animals.
- They write how each behaviour helps the young.
- They mark any animal where the parent does nothing after laying eggs.
- Groups pool their rows into a class grid and look for the pattern.
