Objective
Students will be able to say, with evidence, whether a heating change can be reversed.
Students are successful when they can
- Reports what the thing was like before, during and after cooling.

- Uses the after-cooling state as the evidence.

- A warm plate or hotplate, chocolate, butter, bread, an egg, a lidded pan of water
- A three-column record: before / heated / after cooling

The lesson
Warm-up — predict two
5 min- Show chocolate and bread. Ask what heat will do to each.
- Ask which will go back when it cools, and record the predictions.
Teach — wait for the cooling
13 min- Heat the chocolate until it melts. Fill the first two columns.
- Heat the bread until it toasts. Fill the first two columns.
- Say the crucial move: neither is finished yet. Both have to cool.
- Come back to the chocolate: hard again. Fill column three.
- Come back to the toast: still toast. Fill column three.
- Say the argument in full: the evidence for reversible is the third column, not the second.
“It changed. Now wait. Did it go back?”
Investigate — four changes
17 min- Groups fill all three columns for four things: chocolate, butter, bread and water under a lid.
- They wait for cooling before writing the last column.
- They sort their four into reversible and not.
- They write the evidence sentence for one of each.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete the 'Back Again, or Not' page.
- Check the sort is by what happened after cooling.

3 min- Ask which change surprised the class most.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Decides before the thing has cooled.
Why: The change is visible immediately.
Fix: The evidence is the third column. Wait for it.
Thinks anything that looks cooked cannot go back.
Why: Toast and fried egg are the examples.
Fix: Melted butter looks changed too, and goes hard again.
Says steam is gone for good.
Why: It disappears into the air.
Fix: Look at the lid. The drips are the same water back again.

- Find a change that goes back only partly.
- Predict what heating sugar will do, then check.
- Say why a baked cake cannot be un-baked.
