The lesson
Warm-up
5 min- Scatter light and dark paper moths on light bark and give ten seconds to find them.
- Count which colour survived.
Teach — variation, advantage, situation
14 min- Name the variation: some moths are darker than others.
- Name the advantage: the ones matching the bark were spotted less.
- Now change the bark to dark and repeat. The advantage swaps.
- Say the crucial third part: an advantage is only an advantage in a situation.
- Do a plant: a deeper root helps in a dry summer and not in a wet one.
- Say what this is evidence for: variation can affect who survives and reproduces.

Investigate — run the moth hunt
19 min- Groups run the moth hunt on two backgrounds, timing and counting.
- They record which colour survived on each background.
- They repeat with a third variation such as size.
