Objective
Students will be able to distinguish defining attributes of a shape from non-defining ones, and build a shape to a given definition.

The lesson
Warm-up — is this a triangle?
5 min- Show six figures in turn: a fat triangle, a thin one, an upside-down one, a three-sided shape with a curved side, a four-sided shape, a triangle drawn in red.
- Take a yes or no on each without discussion. Record the votes.
Teach — which facts count
12 min- Go back to the votes and settle each one, keeping a running list of the reasons given.
- Sort the reasons into two columns: reasons that decided it, and reasons that did not.
- Three sides and straight sides go in the first column. Red, big and pointing up go in the second.
- Name the columns: what makes it a triangle, and what is just true about this one.
- Do the same for a rectangle. Four sides, four square corners; not 'longer than it is tall'.
- State the consequence directly: a square has four sides and four square corners, so a square is a rectangle. Let that sit.

Guided practice — build to the rule
11 min- Give each pair a rule — four sides, at least one square corner — and ask them to build three different shapes that fit.
- Different is the requirement. Three copies of the same shape do not show anything.
- Then ask them to build something that nearly fits but does not, and say which part of the rule it breaks.
Independent practice
9 min- Students complete an attributes page.
- Watch for a shape rejected because of its orientation. That is the same misconception from Kindergarten and it has not gone away.

3 min- Show a very long thin rectangle and ask if it is a rectangle.
- Ask what would have to change for it to stop being one. Only the sides or the corners qualify.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says a long thin triangle is not a triangle.
Why: The prototype triangle is roughly equilateral, and everything is compared against that picture rather than against a definition.
Fix: Build both on a geoboard and count sides. The count is the definition, and the two shapes give the same count.
Says a square is not a rectangle.
Why: The two words have been taught as alternatives, so one shape can only be one of them. In everyday speech that is how they are used.
Fix: Check the square against the rectangle rule — four sides, four square corners. It passes. Categories can contain other categories, and this is the first example of it.
Includes colour or size when asked what makes a shape a triangle.
Why: Everything true about the example has been absorbed into the definition, because nothing has yet distinguished the two kinds of fact.
Fix: Show two triangles differing only in colour. If colour were part of the definition, one of them would have to stop being a triangle.
If they are not there yet
- Work with one shape at a time and a clear set of non-examples, so the boundary is drawn by comparison rather than by definition.
- Use a geoboard where the sides must be straight, removing curved near-misses from consideration.
If they finish early
- Build a four-sided shape with no square corners and name it.
- Decide whether a rectangle is also a square, which is the direction that does not hold.
- Write a rule that a partner has to build to.
Exit ticket
Ana says this is not a triangle because it is upside down and blue. Is she right? Explain.
What to look for: No, with a reason naming three straight sides. An answer that agrees with Ana, or that says no without a reason, both need the two-column sort again.
