Students will be able to explain area as the number of unit squares needed to cover a figure with no gaps or overlaps.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — cover it
5 min- Give each pair a paper rectangle and a pile of tiles and ask them to cover it completely.
- Do not say how. The gaps and overlaps that appear are the lesson's material.
Teach — no gaps, no overlaps, same size
14 min- Show a covering with a gap. Ask whether the count is the area. It is not — some of the shape was never covered.
- Show a covering with overlaps. Same problem in reverse: some squares were counted for surface they did not cover.
- State the two rules and cover the rectangle properly, counting as you go.
- Now cover the same rectangle with larger tiles. The count is smaller. Ask whether the rectangle got smaller.
- It did not — the unit changed. Say that the number is meaningless without the unit it counts.
- Finally, draw around the rectangle with a finger and say that is the perimeter, a different question entirely.

Guided practice — cover and count
12 min- Pairs cover several shapes with tiles and record the area with its unit.
- Then they cover one shape twice with different sized tiles and record both.
- Ask which answer is right. Both are, and that is the point about units.
Independent practice
11 min- Students complete an area page.
- Answers given as a bare number with no unit are worth marking as incomplete, because the unit is half the answer.
Close
3 min- Hold up two shapes with the same area but different outlines and ask which has more area.
- Neither, and the surprise is worth the last minute.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Confuses area with perimeter and counts round the edge.
Why: Both are measurements of the same shape and both were introduced with the word 'how big'. Nothing yet separates them in the pupil's vocabulary.
Fix: Cover for area, walk the edge with a finger for perimeter. Two different physical actions, done on the same shape in the same minute.
Covers with gaps and counts the tiles as the area.
Why: The task was read as 'put tiles on it' rather than 'cover it completely', and a nearly-covered shape looks done.
Fix: Ask what is underneath the gaps. That surface is part of the shape and has not been counted, so the number is too small.
Says a shape covered by 6 large tiles has less area than the same shape covered by 24 small ones.
Why: The count is being read as the area with no attention to what is being counted.
Fix: Always state the unit — six big squares, twenty-four small squares. The same area, two honest descriptions.
If they are not there yet
- Use rectangles whose dimensions match the tiles exactly, so no partial squares arise.
- Give tiles that lock together, which prevents gaps and overlaps physically.
If they finish early
- Find the area of a shape made from two rectangles joined together.
- Draw two different shapes with the same area.
- Estimate the area of a shape with a curved edge by counting whole and part squares.

This shape is covered by 12 square tiles. What is its area? What would change if the tiles were bigger?
What to look for: 12 square units, and a smaller count with bigger tiles while the shape stays the same. An answer that the shape gets smaller means the unit is not yet separate from the number.
