The lesson
Warm-up — what is the question asking?
5 min- Read three problems aloud. For each, ask only what the question wants, not how to get it.
- Two are one-step, one is two-step. Do not say which.
Teach — the answer you need before the answer
13 min- Read: 'There were 46 books. 18 were borrowed, then 25 were returned. How many now?'
- Ask what you can work out first. 46 − 18 = 28 books. Write it and label it: books after borrowing.
- Ask if 28 answers the question. It does not, and saying so out loud is the step pupils skip.
- Second step: 28 + 25 = 53. Label it: books now.
- Draw the whole thing as a bar that shrinks then grows, so the two steps are visible at once.
- Do a second problem where the first step is a total and the second a comparison, so the shape of the two steps changes.

Guided practice — label every number
12 min- Pairs solve two-step cards, writing a label beside every number they produce.
- The rule is that a bare number scores nothing — it must say what it counts.
- Circulate and ask 'is that what the question asked?' at the halfway point of each problem.
Independent practice
12 min- Students work a mixed one- and two-step page.
- Answers that match the intermediate result are the diagnostic error. The arithmetic was right and the reading was not.

3 min- Read a two-step problem and ask only for the first step and what it would find.
- Stopping before the answer is deliberate — the planning is the part being taught.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Gives the intermediate result as the final answer.
Why: A number was produced and the problem felt finished. Every one-step problem so far has ended at the first calculation, so stopping there is a well-trained habit.
Fix: Label every number with what it counts, then read the question again. A label that does not match the question is a visible, self-checkable signal.
Adds all three numbers in the problem.
Why: Three numbers are present and no plan exists, so they all get used. This is what happens when the story was not understood.
Fix: Retell the story without numbers first — books left, then books came back. The shape of the story dictates the operations before any number is touched.
Does both steps correctly but in the wrong order.
Why: The order of the sentences in the problem has been followed rather than the order events happened, and sometimes those differ.
Fix: Draw the timeline before calculating. Which happened first is a question about the story, not about the arithmetic.
If they are not there yet
- Give the first step as a separate question, then the second, before combining them into one problem.
- Use numbers within 20 so the arithmetic is automatic and all the attention goes on the structure.
If they finish early
- Give a two-step problem where the middle quantity is never stated and must be inferred.
- Ask pupils to write a two-step problem with the answer 34.
- Solve a problem where the second step is a comparison rather than a calculation on the same quantity.
Exit ticket
There were 52 apples. 19 were sold and then 24 more were delivered. How many now? Label each number you write.
What to look for: 57, with 33 labelled as the middle step. An answer of 33 means the middle result was handed in; an answer of 95 means all three numbers were added.
