The lesson
Warm-up — estimate first
6 min- Give four calculations and take only estimates, by rounding both numbers.
- Every answer today will be checked against these, so they get written down.
Teach — what the small digits mean
15 min- Add 3,847 + 2,596 in columns, saying what each carried digit is. The 1 above the tens is one ten, not one.
- Say why: fourteen ones is one ten and four ones, and the 1 records where the ten went.
- Now 6,000 − 2,437. The ones column has nothing and neither do the next two.
- Trade one thousand into ten hundreds, one hundred into ten tens, one ten into ten ones — one at a time, saying each.
- The row of crossed-out digits is a record of three trades, not a magic trick.
- Check against the estimate: about 6,000 minus about 2,400 is about 3,600. The answer 3,563 is close, so nothing has gone badly wrong.

Guided practice — say the trade
14 min- Pairs work calculations, saying aloud what each carried or borrowed digit is worth.
- Every subtraction gets checked by adding the answer back.
- The zero cases are done with base ten materials alongside.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a mixed calculation page.
- Subtractions across zeros are the diagnostic. Errors elsewhere are usually slips; errors there are conceptual.

3 min- Give 5,000 − 1,999 and ask whether the algorithm is the best method here.
- Counting on from 1,999 is quicker, and noticing that is worth the last minute.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Subtracts the smaller digit from the larger in each column regardless of position.
Why: Every column must produce a digit, and taking the smaller from the larger is the only subtraction available without a trade.
Fix: Build one case with base ten materials. Two units cannot give seven away, and the impossibility is visible before the trade is offered.
Loses track when subtracting across three zeros.
Why: The cascade of trades has to be tracked mentally while the notation shows only the crossings out.
Fix: Rewrite the top number after the trades — 6,000 as 5 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. One rewrite replaces three chained deductions.
Adds correctly but writes a two-digit result in one column.
Why: The carry step has been skipped, usually under time pressure rather than from misunderstanding.
Fix: Check the answer against the estimate. A column holding two digits gives an answer with too many digits, which the estimate catches immediately.
If they are not there yet
- Work with three-digit numbers and one regrouping before moving to four digits and several.
- Keep base ten materials available for every subtraction involving a zero.
If they finish early
- Subtract from 10,000 and from 100,000.
- Find the missing number in 4,352 + ___ = 9,001.
- Decide which of a set of calculations are better done mentally, and say why.
