Students will be able to sort objects into given categories, count each category, and say which category has the most and fewest.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — one rule at a time
4 min- Pour out a mixed collection and ask how it could be sorted. Take several ideas.
- Pick one — by colour — and say the other ideas are also right but cannot be used at the same time.
Teach — sort, count, compare
9 min- Sort the collection into three hoops by colour, in front of the class, narrating each decision.
- Deliberately hesitate over one ambiguous object and ask the class to decide. Sorting requires a rule that settles every case.
- Count each hoop and write the number beside it.
- Line the hoops up from most to fewest. That reordering is the step children skip.
- Ask how many altogether, and check it matches the number you poured out.

Guided practice — sort and report
8 min- Pairs sort their own collection into given categories, count, and record.
- They then order the groups and report the most and the fewest.
- Ask each pair whether the biggest pile is always the one with the most. With mixed object sizes, it is not.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a sort-and-count page.
- The common slip is counting the objects in the picture that were not sorted. Check the totals add back to the whole.
Close
3 min- Sort the class by something visible — shoes with laces and without — and count each group.
- Ask which has more and finish by checking the two counts add to the class total.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Puts one object into two groups because it fits both.
Why: The categories overlap and nothing has said they must not. A red triangle genuinely belongs with the reds and with the triangles.
Fix: Sort by one attribute per round, announced before starting. If the rule is 'by colour', shape is not available as a reason.
Says the group taking up the most table has the most objects.
Why: Area is standing in for count, the same substitution that makes a spread-out row look like more.
Fix: Line each group up in a row from a common start. The rows are directly comparable and the biggest pile is often not the longest row.
Counts groups accurately but cannot say which has the most.
Why: The counts exist as separate facts. Comparing them requires ordering numbers, which is a different skill from counting them.
Fix: Order the physical groups before comparing the numbers. Once the hoops are in order, the numbers written beside them are in order too.
If they are not there yet
- Use two categories rather than three or four, with an obvious difference between them.
- Label the trays with a picture as well as a word, so the sorting rule is visible throughout rather than remembered.
If they finish early
- Sort the same collection a second way and notice the totals stay the same while the groups change.
- Ask how many more are in the biggest group than the smallest.
- Turn the counts into a simple bar picture, one square per object.
