Objective
Students will be able to read, write and compare multi-digit numbers in numerals, number names and expanded form.
Students are successful when they can
- Reads a six-digit number aloud correctly.
- Writes a number from its spoken name, including internal zeros.
- Compares two multi-digit numbers using >, = or <.

The lesson
Warm-up — say it aloud
6 min- Show four-digit numbers and read them together, including one with a zero in the tens.
- Reading aloud is where most large-number errors show up first.
Teach — group in threes
15 min- Write 428613 with no comma and ask someone to read it. Watch the hesitation.
- Add the comma: 428,613. Now read the first group, say 'thousand', then read the second group.
- Say the rule: the comma is not decoration, it splits the number into a thousands part and a rest.
- Write 305,027 and read it. Both zeros hold places and neither gets said as a word.
- Now compare 428,613 and 428,631. Line them up and go left to right; the first difference is in the tens.
- Write one number in expanded form: 400,000 + 20,000 + 8,000 + 600 + 10 + 3.

Guided practice — three forms
14 min- Pairs take a number and write it three ways: numerals, words, expanded form.
- One partner says a number aloud and the other writes it, which is where internal zeros cause trouble.
- Then they compare pairs of numbers and record the symbol.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a large numbers page.
- Numbers written with too many digits — 300,0027 for three hundred thousand and twenty-seven — mean the name was transcribed piece by piece.

3 min- Read 640,008 aloud as a class.
- Three zeros, none of them spoken, and everyone gets it right by now.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Writes 'four hundred thousand and sixty-two' as 400,00062.
Why: The name is being transcribed in fragments, each written as it is heard, with no check on the total number of digits.
Fix: Use a place value chart with six boxes. Every place gets exactly one digit, and the zeros fill the boxes the name did not mention.
Says 428,613 as 'four two eight six one three'.
Why: The number has been read as a string of digits because grouping it has not been offered as a strategy.
Fix: Cover the last three digits and read what remains, then uncover. Two readable numbers instead of one unreadable string.
Compares 98,765 and 102,344 and picks the first because its digits are larger.
Why: The individual digits are being compared without checking the number of digits first.
Fix: Count the digits before anything else. Six beats five before any comparison is made.
If they are not there yet
- Work with four- and five-digit numbers before six.
- Provide a place value chart with the thousands group shaded, so the split is visible on the page.
If they finish early
- Order six numbers of mixed lengths.
- Write the largest and smallest six-digit numbers using six given digits.
- Read numbers into the millions using the same grouping rule.
Exit ticket
Write 'three hundred and six thousand, forty' in numerals. Then compare 76,540 and 76,504.
What to look for: 306,040 and 76,540 > 76,504. Extra digits in the first mean the name was transcribed in pieces; an error in the second means the comparison did not run right far enough.
