Objective
Students will be able to plot and read points in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane using ordered pairs.
Students are successful when they can
- Plots (3, 5) correctly and distinguishes it from (5, 3).
- Reads the coordinates of a marked point.
- Names the origin and both axes.

The lesson
Warm-up — describe where it is
6 min- Mark a point on a blank grid and ask a pupil to describe its position so someone else could find it.
- The descriptions will be clumsy. The coordinate system is the fix.
Teach — along, then up
15 min- Name the parts: two perpendicular axes, the x-axis across and the y-axis up, meeting at the origin (0, 0).
- Plot (3, 5): from the origin, along 3 then up 5. Say the phrase 'along the corridor, up the stairs'.
- Now plot (5, 3) on the same grid. Two different points from the same two numbers.
- Ask why the order matters. Because there is no other way to tell the two points apart, so the order was agreed.
- Plot four points and join them into a rectangle, reading off each pair.
- Finish with a point on an axis, such as (4, 0), where one coordinate is zero.

Guided practice — plot and read
14 min- Pairs plot a set of points and join them to reveal a shape.
- They then read off the coordinates of points already marked.
- One partner names a point and the other plots it without seeing the card, then they compare.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a coordinates page.
- Points that are reflections of the correct one across the diagonal are reversed pairs, and they show as a consistent pattern.

3 min- Ask where (0, 6) is and where (6, 0) is.
- On the y-axis and on the x-axis. The zero makes the order impossible to ignore.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Plots (3, 5) at the position of (5, 3).
Why: The two numbers have been used without the order being enforced, and on a square grid both are plausible positions.
Fix: Say 'along the corridor, then up the stairs' out loud for every point. The phrase encodes the order and survives longer than the rule.
Counts the grid lines starting at 1 rather than 0.
Why: Counting objects starts at one, and the lines look like objects to count. The origin is a starting point rather than a first item.
Fix: Start every plot at the origin and count moves, not lines. The first move lands on 1, and the origin is where you were before you moved.
Cannot place a point where one coordinate is zero.
Why: Zero has been read as 'no position' rather than as a position on the axis.
Fix: Plot (4, 0) by moving along 4 and up nothing. Staying put is a legitimate instruction and lands the point on the axis.
If they are not there yet
- Use grids labelled on the axes with arrows showing the direction to move.
- Plot points where the two coordinates are clearly different, before any with equal values.
If they finish early
- Plot a shape and then plot it again with every x-coordinate doubled.
- Find the distance between two points on the same horizontal line.
- Plot the fourth vertex of a rectangle given three.
Exit ticket
Plot (2, 6) and (6, 2). Then write the coordinates of the point 3 along and 4 up.
What to look for: Two distinct points in the right places, and (3, 4). Both points plotted in the same place means the order is not being applied.
