Objective
Students will be able to organise data into up to three categories and answer how many, how many more and how many altogether from the chart.
Students are successful when they can
- Records data with one mark per item.
- Reads a total from a bar or picture chart without recounting the objects.
- Answers a 'how many more' question from two bars.
What you need
- A real question to survey — favourite fruit from three options
- Squared paper for building a bar chart
- Sticky notes, one per pupil
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — collect it
6 min- Ask the survey question. Each pupil puts a sticky note in one of three columns on the board.
- The columns are already a bar chart, and saying so at the end rather than the start is worth the wait.
Teach — the chart answers questions the pile cannot
11 min- Straighten the sticky notes so the columns start from the same line. Ask why that matters.
- Count each column and write the number at the top.
- Ask which was most popular. Answerable at a glance now; it was not when the notes were scattered.
- Ask how many more chose apples than bananas. Model finding the difference by looking at the gap between the tops.
- Ask how many people were asked altogether, and check it against the class size. The three totals must add back to everyone.
- Redraw it as a picture graph with one symbol per person, so both forms are on the board together.

Guided practice — four questions per chart
12 min- Pairs get a prepared chart and answer four questions: most, fewest, how many more, how many altogether.
- They must say which part of the chart gave each answer.
- Add one question the chart cannot answer — 'how many like oranges' when oranges was not an option — and let them say so.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete a reading charts page.
- 'How many more' answered with the taller bar's total is the error to look for; it means the question was read as 'how many'.
Close
3 min- Show the class chart again and ask one question that needs two bars.
- Comparison, not reading off, is the skill that carries into later grades.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Answers 'how many more chose apples than bananas' with the number who chose apples.
Why: The question has been read as 'how many chose apples', because that is the question the chart most obviously answers and 'more' has again been read as a signal to look for a big number.
Fix: Cover the part of the taller bar that matches the shorter one. What is left sticking out is the answer, and it is visibly not the whole bar.
Builds bars that do not start from the same line.
Why: The bars have been drawn as separate columns of squares rather than as measurements from a common baseline.
Fix: Use squared paper and draw the baseline first. A bar that floats cannot be compared, and comparing is the only reason the chart exists.
Counts the symbols on a picture graph but ignores that each stands for one person.
Why: At this scale the key is one-to-one and never has to be thought about, so it does not get read.
Fix: Show one picture graph where each symbol stands for two. It fails immediately, and the key becomes something to check every time.
If they are not there yet
- Work with two categories rather than three, and use real objects lined up before moving to a drawn chart.
- Give the chart already drawn so the work is reading it rather than building it.
If they finish early
- Ask a question that needs all three bars — how many did not choose apples.
- Collect data from another class and compare the two charts.
- Draw a picture graph where one symbol stands for two people.
Exit ticket
The chart shows 8 chose red, 5 chose blue, 3 chose green. How many more chose red than blue? How many were asked?
What to look for: 3 and 16. An answer of 8 to the first question means 'more' triggered a lookup rather than a comparison.
