Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — shape hunt
4 min- Children find a circle in the room, then a rectangle, then a triangle.
- Take the answers and name each one back precisely — the clock face is a circle, the door is a rectangle.
Teach — name it and place it
9 min- Hold up each shape tile and name it. Include the hexagon, which is unfamiliar and therefore memorable.
- Place a triangle above a square on the board. Say the sentence: the triangle is above the square.
- Move it below, then beside. Same two shapes, three different sentences.
- Put a cube in front of a cylinder and ask for the sentence.
- Say why the words matter: 'it is over there' cannot be followed, but 'below the window' can.

Guided practice — build behind a screen
8 min- Partner A builds an arrangement of three shapes behind a screen and describes it.
- Partner B builds what they hear without looking.
- Compare. Every difference is a sentence that was not precise enough, and that is the feedback.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a name-the-shape page.
- Watch for a triangle called a square when it is small — size is still interfering with naming for some children.
Close
3 min- Describe an object in the room by shape and position without naming it. Class guesses.
- Let a child take the next turn, which is the real test of whether the words are usable.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Calls a long thin rectangle 'not a rectangle'.
Why: The example rectangles met so far have been roughly square-ish, so proportion has quietly become part of the definition.
Fix: Show a family of rectangles from nearly square to very long. Count four sides and four corners on each. What stays the same is the definition; the rest is not.
Uses 'over there' and pointing instead of a position word.
Why: Pointing works in the room and always has. The words are not needed until the listener cannot see.
Fix: The screen game. With the partner unable to see the pointing, the position words become the only tool available.
Confuses above and behind when describing a picture.
Why: On a flat page, further up and further back look the same, and the two words have not had to be distinguished before.
Fix: Do it with real objects on a desk first, where above and behind are physically different directions, before returning to the page.
If they are not there yet
- Work with three shape names — circle, square, triangle — until they are automatic before adding rectangle and hexagon.
- Use two position words at a time, and add the next pair once those are secure.
If they finish early
- Describe a position using two words at once: above the square and beside the circle.
- Name the shapes of the faces of a solid, which links the flat names to the solid ones.
- Give directions around the classroom using only position words.
Exit ticket
Draw a circle. Draw a square below it. Draw a triangle beside the square.
What to look for: Three correctly named shapes in the right places. A triangle above the square means the position words are being guessed; a square drawn as a rectangle is a naming issue and a separate note.
