Objective
Students will be able to interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison and distinguish multiplicative from additive comparison.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — two kinds of more
6 min- Build a bar of 4. Then build one that is 3 more, and one that is 3 times as many.
- Seven and twelve. Both were 'more', and they are not close.
Teach — times as many
15 min- Write 35 = 5 × 7 and read it out as a comparison: thirty-five is five times as many as seven.
- Build it: a bar of 7, and a bar made of five of those. The second bar is the 35.
- Read the same equation the other way: thirty-five is seven times as many as five. Both are true.
- Now the contrast. Write 'Ana has 3 more books than Ben' and 'Ana has 3 times as many books as Ben'.
- Build both with Ben on 5. Ana is 8 in the first and 15 in the second.
- Say why the distinction matters: one adds a fixed amount, the other scales. As Ben's number grows, the gap in the first stays 3 and the gap in the second grows too.
“Three more is a step. Three times as many is a stretch. The word 'times' is the only thing separating them in the sentence and it changes everything.”
Guided practice — build both readings
14 min- Pairs take a comparison card and decide whether it is additive or multiplicative before drawing it.
- They build the bar model and write the equation.
- For each multiplicative card, they also write the equation the other way round.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a comparison page.
- Additive answers to multiplicative questions are the diagnostic. The arithmetic will be right and the reading was not.

3 min- Ben has 6 marbles. Ana has 4 times as many. Then: Ana has 4 more.
- Twenty-four and ten, said back to back.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Reads '4 times as many as 6' as 10.
Why: 'Times' has been absorbed into the general family of comparison words and treated as another way of saying 'more', which is additive.
Fix: Build both bars physically side by side. Four copies of six against six plus four is a difference nobody argues with.
Writes 35 = 5 × 7 but cannot say which quantity is being compared to which.
Why: The equation has been produced as arithmetic without the comparison being read back into it.
Fix: Say the sentence aloud every time, both ways round. The equation is a claim about two quantities and reading it keeps it that way.
Given 'Ana has 3 times as many as Ben, who has 12', answers 4.
Why: The comparison has been run backwards — dividing rather than multiplying — because the larger number was assumed to be the one given.
Fix: Draw the bars before calculating. Ben's bar is drawn first and Ana's is visibly three of it, so the direction is fixed by the picture.
If they are not there yet
- Use small numbers and physical bars so both comparisons can be seen at once.
- Present additive and multiplicative versions of the same statement side by side rather than mixed.
If they finish early
- Given the larger quantity and the multiplier, find the smaller.
- Write a comparison where the answer is the same whether it is read additively or multiplicatively, and say why.
- Solve a two-step comparison problem.

Sam has 8 stickers. Kim has 5 times as many. How many does Kim have? Now: Kim has 5 more. How many?
What to look for: 40 and 13. A first answer of 13 means 'times as many' was read as 'more than' — the two bars are the fix.

What mistakes should I expect in this lesson?
Three, each a reasoning error rather than carelessness: reads '4 times as many as 6' as 10; writes 35 = 5 × 7 but cannot say which quantity is being compared to which and given 'Ana has 3 times as many as Ben, who has 12', answers 4. The plan gives the thinking behind each one and the teaching move that addresses the thinking rather than the symptom.
How do I know whether the lesson worked?
The exit ticket asks: “Sam has 8 stickers. Kim has 5 times as many. How many does Kim have? Now: Kim has 5 more. How many?.” 40 and 13. A first answer of 13 means 'times as many' was read as 'more than' — the two bars are the fix.
