Objective
Students will be able to measure the length of an object with a ruler and choose an appropriate unit and tool.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — count the units
5 min- Measure a strip with cubes laid end to end and count them.
- Ask what would happen if there were a gap between two cubes. The count would be right and the length would be wrong.
Teach — start at zero
13 min- Measure a pencil with the ruler's physical end against it, and announce a wrong answer.
- Ask what went wrong. Point out the strip of plastic before the zero mark.
- Redo it lined up with zero. Say what the ruler actually is: a row of unit lengths, laid out for you, starting at the zero.
- Measure something longer than the ruler by marking the end and sliding along, counting the whole rulers.
- Show the metre stick. Ask which tool for the door, the desk and a paperclip, and why.
- Measure the same object in centimetres and then with a bigger unit, and note the number gets smaller while the object does not.

Guided practice — measure and record
12 min- Pairs measure five objects, recording the length and the unit.
- One partner measures, the other checks the zero is lined up before the reading is taken.
- Include one object longer than the ruler, so the sliding technique gets used.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a measuring page.
- Answers consistently one unit too long are the start-at-the-edge error and show as a pattern, not as scattered mistakes.

3 min- Hold a ruler against an object with the object starting at 3, and ask for the length.
- Subtracting the start is the extension, and finishing on it plants the idea.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Measures from the end of the ruler rather than from zero.
Why: The ruler is being treated as an object whose edge is its beginning, which is exactly how comparing two objects directly worked in earlier grades.
Fix: Use rulers with a visible margin before zero, and have the checking partner confirm the alignment every time. Rulers that start flush at zero hide the problem rather than solving it.
Counts the marks instead of the spaces, giving a length one too long.
Why: Counting objects means counting things you can see, and the marks are the visible things. The spaces are what the units actually are.
Fix: Lay cubes along the ruler. Each cube fills a space, and the count of cubes matches the count of spaces, not the marks.
Measures a door in centimetres and gets lost in the count.
Why: One unit has been learned and is being applied everywhere, because choosing a unit has not yet been presented as part of the task.
Fix: Offer both tools and ask which will be quicker before measuring. The choice becomes a step rather than an assumption.
If they are not there yet
- Measure with cubes laid end to end before using a ruler at all. The ruler is a row of cubes printed on plastic, and that connection has to be made.
- Mark the zero on the ruler with a sticker.
If they finish early
- Measure an object placed so it starts at 4 on the ruler.
- Estimate before measuring and record both, then compare.
- Measure the same object in centimetres and metres and write the relationship.
Exit ticket
A pencil is lined up from 0 to 14 on a centimetre ruler. How long is it? What if it were lined up from 2 to 16?
What to look for: 14 cm both times. An answer of 16 for the second means the end reading is being taken as the length rather than the distance travelled.
