Students will be able to find the area of a rectangle by counting unit squares, and begin to use the row structure to count faster.

The lesson
Warm-up — count without losing your place
5 min- Show a 4 by 6 rectangle on a grid and count it one square at a time, deliberately losing track.
- Ask for a better way. Someone will suggest rows before you do.
Teach — rows are the shortcut
14 min- Count the same rectangle by rows: six in the first row, six in the second, and so on.
- Write 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24 and mark the answer as 24 square units.
- Ask why every row has the same number. Because it is a rectangle — that is what makes the shortcut possible.
- Do a 3 by 8 rectangle by rows and then by columns. Twenty-four both ways.
- Show an L-shaped figure on the grid. The row shortcut does not work directly, so split it into two rectangles.
- Count each rectangle and add. The method survives by being applied to the pieces.

Guided practice — count two ways
12 min- Pairs find the area of several rectangles, first by counting all and then by rows.
- They record both and compare the effort.
- Then they tackle one L-shape by splitting it.
Independent practice
11 min- Students complete a counting squares page.
- Answers one or two out on the larger rectangles are tracking errors; the row method is the fix, not more care.

3 min- Show a 5 by 7 rectangle and ask for its area without counting every square.
- Seven, five times. The multiplication is one lesson away and this is where it comes from.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Counts the squares along two sides and adds them.
Why: Two numbers describe the rectangle and adding is the operation most available. This is the perimeter calculation applied to an area question.
Fix: Count the squares inside for a small rectangle and compare with the added answer. The two numbers differ and the pupil can see which one matched the tiles.
Miscounts a large rectangle by one or two.
Why: Counting many identical objects with no structure invites double counting and skipping. The rectangle has structure, and it is not being used.
Fix: Count by rows and mark each completed row with a pencil line. The structure does the tracking.
Gives the area of an L-shape by counting only the larger rectangle.
Why: The figure has been treated as one rectangle because that is what every previous example was.
Fix: Draw the split line first, before any counting. Two rectangles are two familiar problems, and the drawing makes them visible.

- Use rectangles no larger than 4 by 5, where counting all is still reliable and the row shortcut can be discovered rather than needed.
- Give squared paper with the rectangle already outlined.
If they finish early
- Find the area of a shape made from three rectangles.
- Find two rectangles with the same area and different side lengths.
- Estimate the area of a shape with a diagonal edge by counting whole and part squares.

What to look for: 24 square units, counted by rows. An answer of 10 is the perimeter-style addition; an answer of 20 to the nearest count means the row structure was not used.
