Objective
Students will be able to state the value of each digit in a three-digit number and write that number in expanded form.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — ten of these makes one of those
5 min- Hold up a unit cube, then a ten-rod. Ask how many cubes make the rod.
- Hold up the hundred-flat. Ask how many rods make it, then how many cubes.
- Establish the ×10 chain before any three-digit number appears. Everything today rests on it.
Teach — build 342, then break it
13 min- Write 342. Build it: three flats, four rods, two cubes.
- Ask the value of each digit in turn, and hold up the matching blocks as they answer.
- Write the expanded form beneath: 342 = 300 + 40 + 2.
- Now write 305 and build it. There are no rods. Ask what the 0 is for.
- Remove the 0 and show that 35 is a different pile of blocks entirely. The zero is holding the tens column open.

Guided practice — digit card scramble
13 min- Give each pair three digit cards, one of them a 0.
- They make every three-digit number possible and build two of them.
- For each, write the expanded form and read it aloud.
- Ask which arrangement made the largest number and why. The answer — the biggest digit goes in the most valuable seat — is the standard restated in their own words.
Independent practice
10 min- Students complete an expanded-form page alone.
- Include at least two numbers containing a zero. A page without them will not surface the misconception this lesson exists to address.
Close
4 min- Put 4 hundreds, 0 tens, 7 ones on the mat and ask for the written number.
- Then ask for 470 in blocks and let the class see the two are different.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Writes 'three hundred and forty-two' as 300402.
Why: The child is transcribing each spoken chunk independently — 'three hundred' as 300, 'forty' as 40, 'two' as 2 — and concatenating. It is a consistent rule, faithfully applied.
Fix: Write 300, 40 and 2 on strips of card and physically slide them so the digits overlap the zeros. The zeros were placeholders and the incoming digits take their seats.
Says the 0 in 305 'means nothing' and drops it, writing 35.
Why: Zero has been taught as the absence of quantity, which is true of its value and false of its function. Nothing has corrected the second part.
Fix: Build 305 and 35 side by side and leave both on the desk. Ask which pile they would rather be given. The zero's job becomes obvious in a way no definition achieves.
Compares 89 and 105 and picks 89 as larger.
Why: Comparison is being done digit by digit from the left — 8 beats 1 — without first checking how many digits each number has.
Fix: Build both. One hundred-flat against eight rods settles it visually, and the rule that follows is theirs: count the columns before you compare the digits.
If they are not there yet
- Keep the three-column mat under the written work so each digit is physically located.
- Work with numbers that have no zeros until the three-column structure is secure, then introduce zeros as a deliberate second phase.
If they finish early
- Give four digit cards including two zeros and ask for the largest and smallest possible numbers.
- Ask them to write 342 as 34 tens and 2 ones, and say whether that is still correct. It is, and working out why is genuine mathematics.
- Move to thousands and let them predict the column name before it is given.
Exit ticket
Write 406 in expanded form. Then explain what the 0 is doing.
What to look for: '400 + 6' with an explanation that the zero holds the tens place. '400 + 0 + 6' is also correct and shows the column structure clearly — accept it. An answer of '46' means the placeholder misconception is live and the side-by-side build is the reteach.
