The lesson
Warm-up — pick it up
4 min- Pass round a paper square and a cube. Ask what is different, and take every answer.
- The one to keep is that the cube has an inside and the square does not.
Teach — flat, solid, and the pictures in between
9 min- Sort a mixed pile into two groups in front of the class, saying flat or solid as each goes down.
- Name the solids: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone. Match each to an everyday object — a box, a ball, a tin, a hat.
- Hold the cube against the board and trace round one face. The trace is a square: a flat shape that came off a solid one.
- Now draw a cube on the board. Ask whether that drawing is flat or solid. It is a flat picture of a solid thing, and saying so directly saves a lot of confusion.
- Return to the cube and count its faces, so the link between the two categories is a count and not just a phrase.

Guided practice — sort and name
8 min- Pairs sort a mixed tray into flat and solid and name each solid.
- They then find a flat shape hiding on each solid by tracing a face.
- A sphere has no flat face to trace, and noticing that is worth stopping for.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a flat-or-solid page.
- Everything on the page is a printed picture, so the answers rest on recognising what a drawing represents. Expect the drawn cube to cause trouble.

3 min- Hold up an object and let the class call flat or solid.
- Finish with a coin, which is a cylinder that looks like a circle, and let the argument run for thirty seconds.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Calls a drawn cube a square.
Why: The front face of a drawn cube really is a square, and it is the part the eye lands on. The child is naming what they see accurately.
Fix: Put the real cube next to the drawing and count faces on the solid. Six faces cannot be a square, and the drawing is standing in for all six.
Says a circle and a sphere are the same shape.
Why: The names have not been separated because the two have never been in the room at the same time, and a ball drawn on paper is a circle.
Fix: Hold the ball and the paper circle together. One rolls in every direction, the other only flops over. The behaviour separates them faster than the definition.
Sorts a thin plastic tile as solid because it can be held.
Why: 'Solid' has been read as 'real' rather than as three-dimensional, which is a reasonable reading of an everyday word.
Fix: Use the words flat and solid alongside a physical test — does it have a thickness worth talking about — and accept that the boundary case is genuinely a boundary case.
If they are not there yet
- Sort real objects only, with no pictures at all, until the two categories are secure.
- Start with cube and sphere, which are the most distinct pair, before adding cylinder and cone.
If they finish early
- Count the faces, edges and corners of a cube.
- Find which solids roll and which stack, and explain what about their shape decides it.
- Trace every face of a solid and name the flat shapes that come off it.
