Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
Objective
Students will be able to find the unknown number in an addition or subtraction equation, wherever in the equation it appears.
Students are successful when they can
- Solves 8 + ___ = 15 and ___ + 6 = 14.
- Solves an equation with the unknown before the equals sign and after it.
- Says whether a number sentence like 5 + 3 = 4 + 4 is true.
What you need
- A pan balance, or a drawn balance on the board
- Cubes, 20 per pair
- Equation cards with the blank in different positions

The lesson
Warm-up — true or false
5 min- Put 4 + 3 = 7 on the board. True.
- Then 7 = 4 + 3. Take the objections; several pupils will say it is backwards.
- Then 4 + 3 = 5 + 2. Let the disagreement run without settling it.
Teach — the equals sign is a balance
12 min- Put 4 cubes and 3 cubes in one pan and 7 in the other. It balances.
- Say what equals means: the two sides weigh the same. It is not an instruction to write an answer.
- Now put 5 and 2 in the second pan instead. Still balanced, so 4 + 3 = 5 + 2 is true.
- Take a cube off one side. It tips. To fix it you can add to the light side or take from the heavy one.
- Write 8 + ___ = 15. Put 8 in one pan and 15 in the other, and let the class work out what to add to balance it.
- Do one with the blank at the front: ___ + 6 = 14, and one after the equals: 12 = ___ + 5.
“Equals does not mean 'work it out'. It means the two sides are the same. Your job is to make them the same.”
Guided practice — balance it
11 min- Pairs take an equation card with the blank in a random position and build both sides with cubes.
- They add or remove until it balances, then write the number.
- Include some cards that are already false, where the answer is 'this cannot balance'.
Independent practice
9 min- Students complete a missing numbers page.
- Blanks at the start of the equation are the diagnostic ones. A pupil who does those as easily as the others has understood balance rather than a procedure.

3 min- Write 9 + 4 = ___ + 5 on the board and ask for the missing number.
- 13 written in the blank is the classic error, and a good thing to catch on the way out of the door.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Answers 9 + 4 = ___ + 5 with 13.
Why: The equals sign has been read as 'the answer goes here', so the blank immediately after it takes the total of everything before it. The 5 is then treated as leftover.
Fix: Build both sides on a balance. Thirteen and five together clearly outweigh thirteen, and the picture makes the error visible without it being marked wrong.
Cannot start ___ + 6 = 14 because there is nothing to add first.
Why: Every equation met so far has been read left to right as a procedure, and this one has no first step to perform.
Fix: Work from the whole: 14 is the total, 6 is a part. The part-part-whole mat from earlier lessons applies directly and gives a place to start.
Says 7 = 4 + 3 is written wrong.
Why: Every equation the pupil has seen puts the operation on the left. The form looks like a mistake because it is unfamiliar, not because it is wrong.
Fix: Write both directions on either side of a balance. The pans do not know which side is which, and neither does the equals sign.
If they are not there yet
- Keep the blank at the end for the first half of the lesson and move it once balance is established.
- Use the physical balance rather than a drawing. Watching it tip does what no amount of explanation does.
If they finish early
- Solve equations with the unknown on both sides of a comparison: ___ + 3 = 6 + 4.
- Write an equation with a given answer and a blank in a chosen position.
- Decide whether a set of number sentences are true or false without calculating both sides fully.
Exit ticket
Fill the blank: 6 + ___ = 13. Then say whether 5 + 4 = 3 + 6 is true or false.
What to look for: 7, and true. 'False' on the second usually means the equals sign is still being read as a signal to compute rather than as a claim about balance.
