Objective
Students will be able to draw a bar graph and a picture graph from a data set of up to four categories and answer comparison questions from it.
Students are successful when they can
- Draws bars from a common baseline with a consistent scale.
- Labels both axes and gives the graph a title.
- Answers a 'how many more' question by comparing two bars.

The lesson
Warm-up — read before you draw
5 min- Show a finished bar graph and ask four quick questions: most, fewest, how many more, how many altogether.
- Knowing what a graph will be asked is what makes drawing it purposeful.
Teach — build it so it can be read
13 min- Take the class data set. Draw the axes and the baseline first.
- Draw one bar, counting squares from the baseline. Draw the second deliberately starting a square higher, and ask what has gone wrong.
- Fix it and state the rule: every bar starts from the same line or the comparison is a lie.
- Label the axes and title the graph. Ask what the graph would mean without the labels — nothing.
- Redraw the same data as a picture graph with one symbol per item, then as one symbol per two items.
- Ask the same four questions of all three graphs. Same answers, different pictures.

Guided practice — draw and interrogate
12 min- Pairs draw a bar graph for a given four-category data set.
- They swap graphs and write three questions for the other pair to answer.
- One question must be a comparison. Writing the question is harder than answering it and shows more.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete a graphs page.
- Check that bars are drawn to the right heights and that comparison questions were not answered by reading a single bar.

3 min- Show a picture graph where one symbol stands for two and ask for a total.
- The key is the whole question, and ending on it sets up the scaled graphs of Grade 3.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Answers 'how many more chose blue than red' with the height of the blue bar.
Why: The question has been read as a lookup because that is what most graph questions have been so far, and 'more' points at the bigger bar.
Fix: Physically cover the part of the taller bar that matches the shorter one. What remains is the answer, and it is visibly not the whole bar.
Draws bars of different widths or with gaps of different sizes.
Why: The bars are being drawn as pictures rather than as measurements, so only the height has been treated as meaningful.
Fix: Draw on squared paper with one square per unit and one column per category. The grid enforces the consistency.
Counts symbols on a scaled picture graph without applying the key.
Why: Every picture graph met before had a one-to-one key, so the key has never had to be read.
Fix: Ask for the total and check it against the original data. The mismatch is the pupil's own to find, and the key is where they will find it.
If they are not there yet
- Work with three categories and small counts, and provide axes already drawn and labelled.
- Build the bars from stuck-on squares before drawing them.
If they finish early
- Draw a picture graph where one symbol stands for five, including a half symbol.
- Write a question that the graph cannot answer, and say why.
- Compare two graphs of the same data drawn with different scales.
