Students will be able to name measurable attributes of an object, including more than one attribute of the same object.

The lesson
Warm-up — describe this
4 min- Hold up a pencil. Take every description offered — yellow, pointy, long, light.
- Sort them into two lists without labelling the lists yet.
Teach — the things you can measure
9 min- Label the two lists: things you could measure, and things you could not.
- Yellow goes in the second list. Ask how much yellow it is, and let the question be as odd as it sounds.
- Take the ribbon. Measure its length in cubes. Then ask if it is heavy, and weigh it against the stone.
- Say it plainly: one object, two measurements, and they do not have to agree. The ribbon is long and light.
- Show a book: not very long, but heavy. The two attributes point opposite ways.

Guided practice — two things about one thing
8 min- Pairs pick an object and write or say two measurable things about it.
- They then find another object that beats it on one attribute and loses on the other.
- That pairing is the goal of the activity and worth more time than the vocabulary.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a page comparing lengths and weights.
- Children answering 'bigger' for everything have not yet separated the attributes — that is the note to make.

3 min- Hold up the feather and the stone. Which is bigger?
- Let the class discover that the question cannot be answered until it says which attribute, and end there.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says the bigger object is always the heavier one.
Why: Size and weight usually do agree in a child's experience, so one word has been doing both jobs and has never been caught out.
Fix: Put a large empty box and a small stone on a balance. The prediction fails visibly, and the two attributes separate in one demonstration.
Describes a pencil as 'big' rather than long.
Why: 'Big' is the general-purpose comparison word and has always been understood. Precision has had no payoff yet.
Fix: Ask 'big how — long or heavy?' every time. The question is more useful than a correction, and after a week the child asks it themselves.
Lists colour and shape as things that can be measured.
Why: The distinction between a description and a measurement has not been drawn — both are true things you can say about the object.
Fix: Ask how much. 'How much long' converts to a number of cubes; 'how much yellow' does not. The test is one question and the child can apply it themselves.
If they are not there yet
- Work with one attribute at a time — a week of length before any weight — so the vocabulary settles before it competes.
- Compare objects with an obvious difference, so the answer is never in doubt and only the naming is being practised.
If they finish early
- Find an object that is longer but lighter than another, and explain how both can be true.
- Measure the same object with cubes and with paperclips and notice the numbers differ.
- Introduce capacity — which holds more — as a third attribute.
