Objective
Students will be able to state the total of a counted set without recounting, and recognise the total is unchanged by rearrangement.
Students are successful when they can
- Answers 'how many?' with the last number counted, not by starting again.
- Says the total is the same after the objects are pushed around.
- Gives one more than a counted set without counting from one.
What you need
- Counters, about 20 per pair
- Paper plates or cloth to cover a set
- Numeral cards 1-20

The lesson
Warm-up — count and freeze
5 min- Count a line of counters aloud together, pointing at each.
- Immediately ask how many. Take answers without commenting yet.
- Do it twice more. Some children will recount every time; note who.
Teach — the last number is the answer
8 min- Count eight counters aloud, touching each. Stop and ask how many.
- When someone recounts, let them, then ask what number they finished on both times.
- Say it explicitly: the last number you say is not just the last one, it is the whole answer.
- Now push the eight counters into a heap. Ask how many. Do not count. Wait.
- Spread them into a circle. Ask again. Counting is allowed, but the point is that the answer was already known.

Guided practice — cover and ask
8 min- Partner A counts a set and covers it with a plate. Partner B says how many are underneath.
- Uncover and rearrange, then ask again without recounting.
- Then add one counter and ask again. That is the first step out of counting and into number.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a count-and-write page.
- The children to watch are the ones who count correctly and then hesitate before writing. The hesitation is the cardinality gap.
Close
3 min- Count six claps together. Ask how many, and take the answer instantly.
- Ask how many if you clap once more. Accept seven without a recount, and stop there.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Counts a set correctly, then counts it again when asked how many.
Why: Counting is understood as an activity rather than as a question with an answer. The child has done the counting; nobody told them it produced a result.
Fix: Cover the set immediately after counting. There is nothing to recount, so the last number has to be used — and using it once is usually enough to establish it.
Says a different total after the counters are rearranged.
Why: Quantity is being judged by how much space the objects take up. A spread-out row genuinely looks like more, and looking is a reasonable strategy that has worked until now.
Fix: Rearrange in full view, slowly, without adding or removing anything. Ask what went in and what came out. Nothing did — so the number cannot have changed.
Recounts from one to find one more than seven.
Why: The count sequence is the only tool available for producing a number, so every question is answered by running it.
Fix: Keep the seven covered and add the eighth counter on top of the cover. There is no set to count, only the known seven and one more.
If they are not there yet
- Work with sets of three to five, where the total can be seen without counting and the last-number rule can be checked against what the eye already knows.
- Count into a line rather than a heap, so the one-to-one match is not also being learned at the same time.
If they finish early
- Ask for one less as well as one more, which is a harder direction and reveals whether the number is held or the sequence is being run.
- Count two sets and ask which has more without matching them one to one.
- Count a set of ten arranged in a circle, where there is no obvious start or end.
Exit ticket
Count these nine dots. Now I cover them. How many are under the cover? How many if I put one more?
What to look for: Nine, then ten. A child who cannot answer once it is covered is counting rather than knowing. A child who says nine and then recounts for the second question has cardinality but not yet counting on.
