Counting On from Any Number
A 30-minute Kindergarten lesson that breaks the habit of restarting at one, so a child asked to count from 47 says 48 rather than beginning the whole sequence again.

Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
Objective
Students will be able to continue the count sequence from any given number under 50 without returning to one.
Students are successful when they can
- Given a number said aloud, says the next three numbers.
- Continues a written sequence from a mid-sequence start.
- Crosses a decade — 38, 39, 40 — without stopping.
What you need
- A number track 1-50 the whole class can see
- Individual number tracks or hundred squares
- Counters to cover numbers on the track

The lesson
Warm-up — the count is already running
5 min- Count together from 1 to 20, then stop the class abruptly at 13.
- Ask what comes next. Take the answer, then continue from 14 together.
- Do it twice more, stopping at a different number. The point is that stopping is not the same as finishing.
Teach — starting in the middle
8 min- Cover 1 to 25 on the class number track with a strip of paper. Point at 26.
- Ask the class to count on. Some will want the strip lifted; do not lift it yet.
- Count on from 26 to 35 together, touching each number.
- Now lift the strip and ask whether the numbers under it changed. They did not — and that is the whole lesson.
- Repeat starting from 47, so the class crosses 50.

Guided practice — pick a card, count on
8 min- Pairs draw a number card and count on five numbers from it, taking turns to say one number each.
- Partner checks against their own number track.
- Circulate for the children whose lips move from one before they answer. That is the habit to name gently and interrupt.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a count-on page with a number track available.
- Watch for sequences that are correct but written slowly, one finger-count at a time — that child has the answer without yet having the skill.
Close
3 min- Say a number. The class says the next one. Go round the room, each child getting a different start.
- End on one that crosses a decade, because that is where tomorrow starts.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Asked to count from 32, whispers the sequence from 1 first.
Why: The number word sequence has been learned as one long chant with no entry point except the beginning. Each number is remembered by the one before it, all the way down.
Fix: Cover the earlier numbers physically. A child who cannot see 1 to 31 cannot run the chant, and the covering strip does the teaching without a correction.
Counts 28, 29, 20, 21.
Why: The decade change is the hardest join in the English number sequence, and 'twenty' is still the most familiar decade word available to reach for.
Fix: Practise only the joins — 18/19/20, 28/29/30, 38/39/40 — as short three-number bursts rather than long counts. The join is the skill; the rest is already fluent.
Counts on correctly aloud but writes the numbers out of order.
Why: Saying and writing are separate skills at this age, and the writing load has overtaken the counting.
Fix: Let them say the whole sequence first, then write it. Separating the two shows whether the counting or the recording is what is actually breaking.
If they are not there yet
- Stay under 20 where the number names are irregular but familiar, and add the decades only once the entry point itself is secure.
- Give a number track with the starting number already circled, so finding the entry point is not part of the task.
If they finish early
- Start from a number and count on ten. The pattern in the ones digit is worth noticing early.
- Count on from a number past 100, where the sequence becomes regular and easier, and let them discover that.
- Count back from a given number, which is genuinely harder and shows whether the sequence is understood or recited.
Exit ticket
Say the next three numbers after 46.
What to look for: 47, 48, 49 said without hesitation. A child who starts at 1 has the sequence but not the entry point — keep the covering strip out tomorrow. A child who says 47, 48, 40 has the entry point and needs decade joins.
