Objective
Students will be able to decide which of two written numerals between 1 and 10 is greater, without building either set.
Students are successful when they can
- Says which of two numerals is greater for any pair to 10.
- Justifies it by position in the count sequence or by known quantity.
- Recognises when two numerals are equal.

- Numeral cards 1-10, two sets per pair
- A class number track 1-10
- Ten frames for checking

The lesson
Warm-up — where does it live?
4 min- Hold up a numeral card. Children point to it on the number track.
- Do six or seven quickly. Speed matters here — the track should be becoming a mental picture.
Teach — later means more
9 min- Put 4 and 7 on the board with no counters anywhere.
- Ask which is greater. Take an answer, then ask how they know, and keep asking until a reason appears.
- Show both on the number track. Seven is further along, and further along the count means more.
- Check once with ten frames — four counters and seven counters — so the rule is grounded, then put the frames away.
- Do three more pairs on the track alone, including 6 and 6.
“You do not have to count them out. Seven comes after four when we count, and everything that comes after is more.”
Guided practice — turn two cards
8 min- Pairs turn over two numeral cards each round and say which is greater.
- The partner who is not deciding checks on the number track.
- Ask for the reason, not just the answer. 'It is further along' is the sentence to hear.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a compare-two-numerals page.
- Children still drawing dots next to each numeral have the concept but not yet the fluency — that is fine today and worth noting.
Close
3 min- Say two numbers aloud without showing them. Children say the greater one.
- Finish with a pair that is equal, so 'neither' is a live answer.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says 8 is greater than 9 because the 8 is written larger on the card.
Why: The numeral is being read as a picture, and the physical size of the mark is standing in for the quantity it names.
Fix: Write both numerals the same size, then write the smaller number deliberately huge and ask again. The contradiction does the work.
Cannot compare without drawing dots for both numbers.
Why: The numeral is still a label that has to be cashed in for objects before it means anything. Nothing is wrong with the reasoning; the number is not yet a quantity on its own.
Fix: Keep the number track visible and ask for the position rather than the objects. Position is a halfway house between counting out and knowing, and it is the one that generalises to 100.
Treats 6 and 6 as needing a winner.
Why: The question has been heard as 'pick one', and every previous example had an answer, so equal has never been an option.
Fix: Deliberately deal several equal pairs in a row. Being allowed to say 'the same' matters more than being told it is possible.
If they are not there yet
- Compare to 5 first, where the quantities are small enough to be seen rather than counted.
- Leave ten frames on the desk. Checking is not cheating, and the checking is what builds the mental image that replaces it.
If they finish early
- Order three numerals from least to greatest.
- Ask which numbers are between 4 and 8, which needs the whole sequence rather than one comparison.
- Compare to 20, where the teen names stop matching the digit order.
Exit ticket
Circle the greater number: 3 and 9. Then: 7 and 7.
What to look for: 9 circled, and nothing circled or both circled on the second with an explanation that they are the same. A child who drew dots got it right the long way — that is progress, not a problem.
