Objective
Students will be able to directly compare two objects on one attribute and describe the difference in words.
Students are successful when they can
- Lines up two objects at a common starting point before comparing.
- Says which is longer and which is shorter, not just which one wins.
- Uses a balance to decide which of two objects is heavier.
What you need
- Pairs of objects with small differences — pencils, ribbons, straws
- A straight edge or table edge to line up against
- A simple balance

The lesson
Warm-up — who is taller?
4 min- Two children stand back to back. Class decides who is taller.
- Then have one stand on a chair and ask again. The laugh is the lesson.
Teach — start them level
9 min- Hold two straws of different lengths, deliberately offset, and ask which is longer.
- Take the wrong answer seriously — from where they are held, it looks right.
- Slide them so both ends start at the table edge. Now ask again.
- Name the rule: both start at the same place, then look at the other end.
- Move to weight. Two objects, one in each hand, is unreliable; put them on the balance instead and let the balance say it.
“Line them up first. If they do not start together, whichever one you slid forward will look like the winner.”
Guided practice — compare and say both
8 min- Pairs take two objects, line them up, and say both halves: 'the ribbon is longer, the straw is shorter.'
- Then weigh a different pair on the balance and say both halves again.
- Insist on both halves. Saying only 'this one wins' hides whether the relationship is understood.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a compare-two-objects page.
- On paper the objects are already drawn, sometimes offset. Watch whether the child notices the starting points.

3 min- Show two pencils lined up at the wrong ends and ask what is wrong before asking which is longer.
- Diagnosing the setup is the skill worth ending on.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says the offset object is longer when it is not.
Why: The comparison is being made at one end only, which is a reasonable strategy that happens to fail whenever the other ends are not aligned.
Fix: Always line up against a physical edge — a table, a book spine. The edge enforces the rule, so it does not have to be remembered.
Judges weight by size and refuses the balance's answer.
Why: Size has been a good predictor of weight for their whole experience, and the balance is contradicting something that has always worked.
Fix: Let them hold both objects with their eyes closed, then use the balance. Two independent methods agreeing against the eye is more convincing than one.
Says 'this one is longer' and cannot say anything about the other.
Why: The comparison has been understood as a property of the winner rather than a relationship between two things.
Fix: Require both sentences every time. Longer and shorter are the same fact told from two ends, and saying both makes the relationship explicit.
If they are not there yet
- Compare objects with a large difference first, so a mistake in lining up does not change the answer and only the method is being learned.
- Give a marked starting line on the table to lay both objects against.
If they finish early
- Compare two objects that cannot be moved next to each other, using a piece of string as a go-between.
- Order three objects by length, which needs two comparisons and a decision about how they combine.
- Ask how much longer, and count the cubes that make up the difference.
