Objective
Students will be able to compare two two-digit numbers by their tens and ones digits and record the result with >, = or <.
Students are successful when they can

The lesson
Warm-up — how many tens?
5 min- Show a number and ask for its tens digit and ones digit, not the whole number.
- Do eight quickly. Splitting the number into two pieces on demand is the skill the lesson runs on.
Teach — tens decide it first
12 min- Build 45 and 39 with rods and units. Ask which is greater, and take the answer.
- Ask how they knew. Push for 'four tens beats three tens', not 'it is bigger'.
- Now build 45 and 47. The tens match, so the tens tell you nothing and the ones decide.
- State the order of work: tens first, ones only if you have to.
- Introduce the symbols. Write 45 > 39 and read it aloud: forty-five is greater than thirty-nine.
- Deliberately write 39 < 45 for the same pair. Same fact, written from the other end, and both are correct.

Guided practice — build, compare, record
11 min- Pairs draw two digit cards each to make two-digit numbers, build both, and place a symbol card between them.
- They read the sentence aloud both ways.
- Include rounds where both make the same number, so the equals card gets used.
Independent practice
9 min- Students complete a compare-numbers page.
- Pairs with matching tens are the diagnostic items. Everything else can be answered by looking at the first digit.

3 min- Write 62 and 26 on the board and ask which is greater and why.
- Same digits, different values — a good sentence to end on.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says 39 is greater than 45 because 9 is greater than 5.
Why: The ones digits are being compared because they are the ones that differ most obviously, and place value has not yet made the tens digit outrank them.
Fix: Build both with rods. Four rods against three is settled before a single unit is counted, and the ones become visibly irrelevant.
Writes the symbol pointing the wrong way.
Why: The symbols are being remembered as pictures rather than read as words. Nothing about the shape says which is which unless a story is attached.
Fix: Read every comparison aloud as a sentence before writing it. If the sentence is right the symbol usually follows; the crocodile story helps some pupils and confuses others, so read the words.
Compares by counting on from one number to the other.
Why: Counting is the reliable method that has always worked, and it does work — it is just far slower and will fail at three digits.
Fix: Compare 87 and 23, where counting is impractical. The method has to change because the numbers made it change, not because it was banned.
If they are not there yet
- Compare numbers with different tens only, until 'tens first' is automatic, then introduce matching tens.
- Keep the base ten materials on the desk. The rods make the comparison a matter of looking rather than remembering.
If they finish early
- Order four two-digit numbers from least to greatest.
- Find all the numbers that are greater than 34 and less than 41.
- Compare three-digit numbers using the same rule, and check whether it still works.
Exit ticket
Write > or < between each pair: 52 __ 48, and 63 __ 67.
What to look for: > then <. An error on the second pair only means the tens-first rule is being applied but not carried through to the ones when the tens tie.
