Objective
Students will be able to decide whether one group has more than, fewer than, or the same number as another, and justify it by matching.
Students are successful when they can
- Matches two groups one to one and reports which has an object left over.
- Uses the words more, fewer and the same correctly.
- Gives the same answer whether the groups are spread out or bunched up.
What you need
- Two colours of counters, about 15 of each per pair
- Matching mats — two rows of boxes lined up

The lesson
Warm-up — which has more?
4 min- Show two groups where the difference is obvious — three counters and eleven.
- Show two groups of eight where one is spread across the table and one is in a heap. Take answers, and do not settle it yet.
Teach — matching decides it
9 min- Return to the two groups of eight. Lay them on a matching mat, one red under each blue.
- Every red has a blue partner and nothing is left over. Name that: the same.
- Now add one red. Match again. One red has no partner, so red has more — and blue has fewer.
- Do a third case with a difference of three, and count the leftovers rather than the groups.
- Point out that at no stage did you count either whole group. Matching answered it.

Guided practice — build and match
8 min- Partner A makes a group; partner B makes one they think has more.
- They match on the mat and say the sentence: red has more, blue has fewer.
- Then B tries to make one that is the same, which is harder and requires matching as they build.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a compare-two-groups page.
- Watch for children answering by which picture is wider rather than by matching. Ask them to draw the matching lines.
Close
3 min- Two children stand with handfuls of cubes. Class decides who has more and says how they know.
- Accept 'we matched them' as the better answer over 'it looks like it'.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Says the spread-out group has more when both have eight.
Why: Length is standing in for number. The wider row genuinely occupies more space, and space has been a reliable guide until the groups were deliberately arranged to disagree.
Fix: Match them without moving anything, drawing a line from each object to its partner. The lines all pair up, and the conclusion arrives without an argument about what looks bigger.
Uses 'less' and 'smaller' for fewer, and applies them to the objects rather than the count.
Why: The comparison words have been learned about size — a smaller cup, less water — and are being carried over to a question about how many.
Fix: Compare a group of three large counters with five small ones. Fewer has to mean the count, because the size answer gives the opposite result.
Counts both groups, gets both totals right, and still cannot say which is more.
Why: The counts are two separate facts with no relationship yet. Knowing seven and nine does not automatically order them.
Fix: Match rather than count for now. Ordering numbers is the next standard, and it is built on the matching this lesson is doing, not the other way round.
If they are not there yet
- Use a matching mat with printed boxes so the one-to-one lining up is done by the paper rather than by hand.
- Keep to differences of three or more, where the leftover is obvious, before comparing groups that differ by one.
If they finish early
- Ask how many more, not just which has more. Counting the leftovers is the start of difference.
- Compare three groups and order them.
- Give one group and ask the child to build a group with exactly two more.

What to look for: The same, ideally with matching lines drawn. 'The squares' means space is still standing in for number, and that child needs the matching mat again tomorrow.
