Students will be able to combine simple shapes to form a larger named shape, and say how many small shapes it took.
Students are successful when they can
- Makes a square from two triangles.

The lesson
Warm-up — what can two make?
4 min- Give each child two identical right triangles and one minute to make something.
- Collect what they made. A square and a larger triangle will both appear.
Teach — the pieces and the whole
9 min- Slide two triangles together into a square on the board. Name the pieces, then name the whole.
- Ask how many triangles are in the square. Two — and that answer is the first fraction they will ever meet.
- Build a 2 by 3 rectangle from six small squares. Count the squares, then name the whole.
- Take one square away and ask if it is still a rectangle. It is not, and the gap makes the requirement visible.
- Build the same rectangle a different way, from three dominoes of two squares each. Same whole, different pieces.

Guided practice — fill the outline
8 min- Pairs fill an outline card with pattern blocks, with no gaps and no overlaps.
- They record how many of each piece they used.
- Then they fill the same outline a second, different way and compare the counts.
Independent practice
6 min- Children complete a compose-shapes page.
- Watch for gaps and overlaps. A filled outline with pieces sticking out has not solved the problem, however close it looks.

3 min- Show two squares joined and ask for its name.
- Then ask how many squares are in it, so both answers stay live at once.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Leaves gaps between the pieces and calls the outline filled.
Why: Covering has been understood as roughly the right area rather than exactly. Nothing has yet made a gap matter.
Fix: Hold the filled outline up to the light. The gaps show, and the child sees the problem rather than being told about it.
Overlaps pieces to make them fit.
Why: The goal has been read as making it look right, and overlapping achieves that when the pieces do not quite work.
Fix: Ask them to count the pieces and check against a partner who did it without overlaps. The counts differ, and the reason is worth finding.
After building a square from two triangles, says there are no triangles any more.
Why: The new whole has replaced the parts. This is the same idea that later makes it hard to see three quarters as three separate quarters.
Fix: Draw the join line on the square. The parts stay visible inside the whole, which is exactly the picture needed for fractions later.
If they are not there yet
- Use outline cards with the internal lines already drawn, so the pieces have marked places to go.
- Start with two pieces only. Composing from six is a different problem, and the two-piece case carries the idea.
If they finish early
- Find every way to fill one outline and compare the piece counts.
- Build a larger version of a shape from copies of itself — four small squares into a bigger square.
- Ask how many triangles would fill a hexagon, and check by building it.
Exit ticket
Use two triangles to make a square. Draw what you made and write how many triangles you used.
What to look for: A square with the join line drawn, and the number 2. A drawing with no join line suggests the parts have been forgotten as soon as the whole appeared.
