The lesson
Warm-up — both measures, one rectangle
6 min- Give a 9 by 4 rectangle and ask for both area and perimeter, with units.
- 36 square units and 26 units. Two answers, two units, one shape.
Teach — running the formula backwards
15 min- State both formulas and say where they come from: area is rows of squares, perimeter is a walk round the edge.
- Now the reverse. A rectangle has area 56 square cm and one side of 7 cm. The other side is 56 ÷ 7 = 8 cm.
- Next: a rectangle has perimeter 30 cm and one side of 9 cm. Two nines take 18, leaving 12 for the other pair, so each is 6.
- Say why perimeter is harder to reverse: two sides are being accounted for, not one.
- Do a real problem: a garden 12 m by 8 m needs fencing and turf. Perimeter for the fence, area for the turf.
- Ask which measure each material needs, and why. Fence goes round; turf covers.

Guided practice — forwards and backwards
14 min- Pairs solve mixed cards: some give both sides, some give area and a side, some give perimeter and a side.
- They must say which is being asked for before calculating.
- Every answer carries its unit.
Independent practice
12 min- Students complete an area and perimeter page.
- Missing-side problems from a perimeter are the diagnostic. Dividing the perimeter by two is the most common wrong move.

3 min- A rectangle has perimeter 24 and one side of 4. What is the other?
- Eight. Take the reasoning, not just the number.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Finds a missing side from the perimeter by dividing the perimeter by 2.
Why: Half the perimeter is the sum of the two different sides, which is a real and useful quantity — it is just not the answer.
Fix: Draw the rectangle and label all four sides. Half of 30 is 15, which is one long plus one short, and the given side is subtracted from that.
Uses the area formula for a perimeter question.
Why: Both formulas take the same two numbers, so the wrong one produces a plausible answer with nothing to flag it.
Fix: Check the unit. A perimeter answer in square centimetres is the wrong measure, and the unit catches it every time.
Gives the area of a garden in metres rather than square metres.
Why: The unit has been carried from the side lengths without noticing the quantity being measured changed.
Fix: Ask what one unit of the answer looks like. A square metre of turf is a thing you could stand on; a metre of turf is not a coverage.
If they are not there yet
- Work forwards only until both formulas are automatic, then introduce missing sides.
- Draw every rectangle on squared paper and label all four sides before calculating.
If they finish early
- Find the area of a compound shape made of two rectangles.
- Find all rectangles with whole-number sides and an area of 48, and compare their perimeters.
- Given the area and the perimeter, find the rectangle.
Exit ticket
A rectangle has an area of 72 square cm and one side of 8 cm. Find the other side and the perimeter.
What to look for: 9 cm and 34 cm. A perimeter of 17 means only two sides were added; 36 for the missing side means the area was halved rather than divided by 8.
