Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill
A 40-minute Grade 2 lesson that builds recall of addition and subtraction facts through strategy sorting, with a defensible position on where timed drills do and do not belong.
Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill is a free 40-minute Grade 2 maths lesson plan for Common Core standard 2.OA.B.2 — know addition and subtraction facts within 20 by heart. It is timed across 5 sections, gives the exact wording to use where the wording carries the mathematics, names 3 misconceptions with the teaching move that addresses each, and ends with an exit ticket and a printable worksheet with its answer key.

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Objective
Students will be able to recall sums within 20 from memory, and reconstruct any fact they do not yet know using a named strategy.
Students are successful when they can
- Answers known facts without visible calculation.
- For an unknown fact, names a route to it rather than counting from one.
- Sorts facts honestly into 'know it' and 'work it out'.
What you need
- Fact cards for sums within 20
- Two sorting trays or hoops labelled KNOW IT and WORK IT OUT
- Personal whiteboards
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — doubles, fast
5 min- Call doubles in random order: 6 + 6, 9 + 9, 4 + 4, up to 10 + 10.
- Answers on whiteboards, held up together.
- Doubles are the anchor for the near-doubles work. If several are shaky, spend the lesson there instead and come back to this plan tomorrow.
Teach — sorting is the assessment
12 min- Explain the two trays. KNOW IT means the answer arrived without working. WORK IT OUT means anything else, including 'I got it right but I had to think'.
- Be explicit that WORK IT OUT is not a failure pile. It is the list of what to practise, and a wrong sort makes practice useless.
- Model it aloud with three cards, including one you deliberately place in WORK IT OUT.
- For each card that lands in WORK IT OUT, name the strategy that reaches it: make ten, near double, or count on from the larger.
“If you had to think, it goes in the second tray. Putting a card in the wrong tray only cheats you out of the practice you wanted.”
Guided practice — sort and route
12 min- Pairs sort a deck of about twenty cards.
- For every card in WORK IT OUT, they write the fact and the strategy on a whiteboard.
- Circulate. The useful question is not 'what is the answer' but 'how did that one get to the first tray'.
- Collect three WORK IT OUT facts that came up repeatedly across pairs — those are tomorrow's warm-up.
Independent practice — timed, with a stated purpose
8 min- Now, and only now, run a short timed page — two minutes, no more.
- State the purpose out loud: this measures which facts are automatic, it does not teach any of them.
- Do not display or compare scores. The moment the timer becomes the point, students trade strategy for guessing, and guessing is the one habit that does not fade.
- Students mark their own and add any missed fact to their WORK IT OUT list.
Close
3 min- Each student names one fact that moved from WORK IT OUT to KNOW IT this term.
- That transfer, not the timed score, is the metric worth naming in the room.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Sorts every card into KNOW IT.
Why: The trays have been read as a judgement about the child rather than about the fact. Admitting to the second tray feels like admitting to being behind.
Fix: Sort your own deck in front of them and put several cards in WORK IT OUT with no ceremony. Then make the second tray the one that gets attention and time.
Fast and accurate on the timed page, slow on any fact in a word problem.
Why: Recall is attached to the visual form of the fact card rather than to the quantities. Change the presentation and the retrieval path disappears.
Fix: Practise the same facts in three formats in one session — card, spoken, and embedded in a sentence. Recall that survives format changes is the recall that is worth having.
Answers get faster and less accurate as the timer runs.
Why: The child has correctly worked out that the reward is speed, and has optimised for it. This is a rational response to the instrument, not carelessness.
Fix: Drop the timer for two weeks. Fluency is accuracy first, and speed follows automaticity — it does not cause it.
If they are not there yet
- Shrink the deck to one strategy family, so the sorting decision is not competing with strategy choice.
- Keep the double ten frame on the desk. A visible reconstruction route is what stops the fallback to counting from one.
If they finish early
- Extend the deck to subtraction and ask which subtraction facts are 'free' once the matching addition fact is known.
- Ask them to find the fact in the deck they think most people put in the wrong tray, and say why.
- Introduce sums to 100 with the same sorting structure.
Exit ticket
Write one fact you know by heart and one you still work out. For the second, write how you work it out.
What to look for: An honest second fact with a named route is the target. A blank second line usually means the KNOW IT over-sort above rather than genuine mastery of all twenty — check it with two spoken facts on the way out.

Questions about Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill
How long does the Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill lesson take?
40 minutes, split across 5 timed sections: warm-up 5 min, teach 12 min, guided practice 12 min, independent practice 8 min, close 3 min. The minutes are stated per section and add up to the stated length, so the plan can be cut or extended at a section boundary rather than abandoned halfway.
Which standard does Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill teach?
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2 — 2.OA.B.2, Operations & Algebraic Thinking for Grade 2: “Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.” In plain terms, know addition and subtraction facts within 20 by heart.
What do I need to teach this lesson?
Fact cards for sums within 20, two sorting trays or hoops labelled KNOW IT and WORK IT OUT, personal whiteboards and the printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan. Everything listed is either ordinary classroom equipment or a free printable from this site — there is nothing to buy and nothing to prepare beyond photocopying.
What mistakes should I expect in this lesson?
Three, each a reasoning error rather than carelessness: sorts every card into KNOW IT; fast and accurate on the timed page, slow on any fact in a word problem and answers get faster and less accurate as the timer runs. The plan gives the thinking behind each one and the teaching move that addresses the thinking rather than the symptom.
How do I know whether the lesson worked?
The exit ticket asks: “Write one fact you know by heart and one you still work out. For the second, write how you work it out.” An honest second fact with a named route is the target. A blank second line usually means the KNOW IT over-sort above rather than genuine mastery of all twenty — check it with two spoken facts on the way out. That tells you whether the class needs a reteach or a thirty-second conversation before you plan tomorrow.
Is there a worksheet to go with Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill?
Yes — 2 printable 2.OA.B.2 worksheets, linked at the end of the plan and free like the rest of the site. Each one comes with an answer key and 25 versions, so the practice after the lesson can be a different paper on every desk.
Is Fact Fluency Within 20 Without Drill-and-Kill free to use?
Yes. The plan, its printables and their answer keys are free to read, print and photocopy for your own class, with no account and no email capture. It was last reviewed on 4 September 2026. Please do not resell it or republish it as your own.
