Students will be able to say what an information text is mostly about and give two facts from it.
Students are successful when they can
- Names the topic in two or three words.
- Gives two facts that belong to that topic.
- Says why a detail is not the topic.
What you need
- A short information book
- A large sheet with a circle in the middle and four lines coming off it
- The printable practice sheet linked at the end of this plan
The lesson
Warm-up — one word for the whole thing
4 min- Hold up four objects that go together — a whisk, a bowl, a spoon, flour.
- Ask for one word for all of them. Baking.
- Say that books have a word like that too.
Teach — the middle of the web
10 min- Read the book. Collect four facts onto the four lines of the web.
- Now ask what goes in the middle: what all four facts are about.
- Take a wrong answer deliberately — one of the four facts. Test it: do the other three belong to that? No.
- Settle the topic and write it in the middle.
- Reread the title. It usually says the topic, which is worth pointing out.
“The topic is the thing all the facts belong to. If three of the facts do not fit it, it is not the topic.”
Guided practice — build a web
8 min- Read a second short text. Pairs fill three facts on their own web.
- Then they write or draw the topic in the middle.
- Circulate for webs where the middle is one of the facts.
Independent practice
6 min- Students complete the main-topic page.
- Read the passage aloud twice.

2 min- Ask for the topic in two words.
- Then one fact that belongs to it.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Gives one fact from the text as the topic.
Why: Both are true things about the book, and nothing has distinguished the whole from a part.
Fix: Apply the fit test out loud: put the fact in the middle of the web and ask whether the other three belong to it.
Gives the topic far too broadly — 'animals' for a book about bees.
Why: A broader word is safer, and it is not wrong, only useless.
Fix: Ask whether the book would be different if it were about dogs. If yes, the topic is narrower than 'animals'.
Retells the whole book rather than giving the topic.
Why: Retelling is the familiar task from the story strand.
Fix: Ask for two or three words only, and hold to it. The constraint is what forces the compression.
If they are not there yet
- Give three possible topics and have them choose.
- Use a book whose title states the topic exactly.
If they finish early
- Ask what the topic of one PAGE is, as against the whole book.
- Ask for a fact that does not belong to the topic and see whether they can find one.
- Ask what a second book on the same topic might add.
