Objective
Students will be able to name the main topic of a text and give three details that support it.
Students are successful when they can
- Names the topic in a few words.
- Gives three supporting details.
- Rejects a detail that does not belong.

The lesson
Warm-up — the odd one out
5 min- Give four details, three of which share a topic.
- Ask which does not belong, and what the topic is.
Teach — topic on top, details underneath
13 min- Read the text. Collect five details onto the organiser.
- Ask what they are all about. Write the topic on top.
- Test it: read each detail and ask whether it belongs under that topic.
- Add a detail that does NOT belong and cross it out together.
- Point out that the topic is not in any one sentence — it has to be worked out.

Guided practice — build the organiser
12 min- Pairs read a second text and fill the organiser.
- They write the topic last, not first.
- Take feedback on topics that were too broad or too narrow.
Independent practice
8 min- Students complete the main-topic page.
- The passage is on the sheet.

2 min- Ask for the topic, then three details.
What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Gives a detail as the topic.
Why: It is in the text and it is true, and nothing has distinguished part from whole.
Fix: Test it: put the detail on top and ask whether the other four fit underneath. They will not.
Gives a topic so broad it says nothing — 'animals'.
Why: A broad topic is never wrong, and safety is attractive.
Fix: Ask whether the text would be different if it were about a different animal. If yes, narrow it.
Retells the text instead of giving details.
Why: Retelling is the familiar move from the story strand.
Fix: Limit to three lines on the organiser. Three lines cannot hold a retelling.
If they are not there yet
- Give the topic and collect the details.
- Use a text with a title that states the topic.
If they finish early
- Name the topic of one paragraph, as against the whole text.
- Find a detail that supports the topic only weakly.
- Write a better title for the text.
