The lesson
Warm-up — how many senses?
5 min- Look up one common word. Count its senses.
- Ask how you would know which one applies.
Teach — the context picks the sense
13 min- Take an unfamiliar word. Build a rough meaning from context and morphology.
- Look it up. Several senses appear.
- Use the rough meaning to pick the right sense — this is why the guess mattered.
- Show somebody taking sense one and getting it wrong.
- Substitute the chosen sense into the sentence to confirm.

Guided practice — four words
12 min- Students work out four words: guess, verify, choose the sense, confirm.
- They record all four steps.
- They flag any word where the first dictionary sense was wrong.

What goes wrong, and why
Each of these is a reasoning error rather than carelessness. The fix addresses the reasoning.
Takes the first dictionary sense.
Why: It is first, so it seems primary.
Fix: Senses are often ordered by frequency, not by relevance. The context decides.
Looks it up without guessing first.
Why: The dictionary is authoritative.
Fix: Without a guess there is nothing to choose the sense with.
Stops at the definition without substituting.
Why: The definition felt like the answer.
Fix: Substitute and read. It has to work in this sentence.

- Two words rather than four.
- Give two senses to choose between.
If they finish early
- Find a word whose right sense is the last one listed.
- Find a word the dictionary defines badly for this context.
- Trace a word's senses from most to least literal.
